FUGLEN OPENING IN JAKARTA!
11.11.2024Fuglen is opening its first cafe in Jakarta, Indonesia on 23 November 2024, making Indonesia the third overseas market to enter after Japan and Korea.
“We’re thrilled to announce the entry of our business in Indonesia,” says Einar Kleppe Holthe, the founder and global director of Fuglen. “In 2012, we opened our first overseas outpost in Tokyo, Japan. Since we have successfully introduced the Norwegian coffee culture and Nordic roast, the style of light roasting that makes the most of the potential characters of high quality beans, to the discerning Japanese coffee lovers. Also, our unique cafe-by-day and bar-by-night style, complete with vintage Norwegian furniture, has won us strong fans across Japan and Asia as many people visit our cafes in Tokyo from overseas.”
In Asia, Indonesia has now matured into an interesting market for Fuglen; it is the second largest coffee producing nation in Asia and fourth in the world. The country is home to coffee classics like Blue Java, Sumatra and a range of celebrity coffee localities. The last twenty years saw Indonesia enter the specialty coffee scene, and we have been trading Cup of Excellence coffees like Rukun Saudur from Sumatra. The industry is really on the up as it was in Oslo in the early 2000s and in Tokyo in the 2010s.
“As Fuglen has been growing organically with a quality first approach over the last twenty-three years under my direction and ownership, we will continue to take this at a steady pace. Our first Jakarta location is relatively small, designed to allow us to find a format and alignment with the local market culture. And our plan is to find a standalone property and potentially a roastery location after a year or two. But for now, all focus is on getting that first step ready.” states Kleppe Holthe.
