Arctis Chair by Hans Brattrud

The Arctis chair is designed by Hans Brattrud in 1958 and in production by Hove Møbler from1961. Frame in massive birch wood, laminated wood strips forming the back and seating. The innovative use of laminated wood strips to give form and functionality makes the Arctics one of Brattud's signature designs . The chairs are a rare find, their high artistic level make them an important contribution to Norwegian mid century furniture design. ———— Hans Brattrud was still a student at the National College of Art and Design when he designed his most famous chair, Scandia Jr. in 1957. The main characteristics are the fine back and seat alignment in eight longitudinal strips of laminated wood. The chair was first produced in 1960, and released to the general public in 1961. Scandia was gradually expanded with more models and variations including Scandia Tilt, Scandianette and Scandia Senior. At Deutsche Handwerksmesse in 1967 Brattrud received the gold medal from the Bavarian State Government for Scandia Jr. With armchair Arctis, designed in 1961, Brattrud developed the use of laminate materials. In 1964 he founded an architectural office and a factory for finished housing production. Today the Scandia series is produced by Fjordfiesta.
